The UK Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 introduced a series of reforms designed to strengthen the accuracy of company information on the Companies House register. As part of these changes, Companies House has announced that identity verification will soon become a mandatory requirement for company officers.
What are the new requirements?
All appointed officers of UK companies will be required to verify their identity before a new company can be registered. For existing companies, current officers will need to complete verification within a 12-month transition period.
The purpose of these checks is to improve trust in the public register and reduce the risk of fraud.
How will verification be completed?
Individuals can verify their identity free of charge through the GOV.UK One Login system. Once registered, you will be asked to provide personal details and supporting documents online.
When verification is complete, Companies House will issue you with a personal code, which must be used in connection with your company appointments. Each officer must create and maintain their own GOV.UK One Login account.
Who must complete identity verification?
The requirement applies to:
- All company directors
- Persons of Significant Control (PSCs)
- Members of Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
Initially, this will apply only to individuals. Requirements for corporate entities and individuals filing on behalf of companies will be introduced later.
When does this take effect?
- Voluntary verification: available since 8 April 2025.
- Mandatory verification: effective from 18 November 2025.
From this date, new appointees must verify their identity before registration. Existing company officers must complete verification within 12 months, usually when filing their next confirmation statement.
Can Small Firms Services assist with verification?
We are not able to complete the verification process or obtain personal codes on your behalf. Verification must be carried out directly with the UK government via the GOV.UK One Login system.
If you experience difficulties, you may choose to use an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), who can complete the checks for a fee. Please note that Small Firms Services is not an ACSP. You will need to locate a suitable provider independently if you wish to use this option.
