From 18 November 2025, Companies House introduced new regulations, which means you will need a personal code to file your company’s confirmation statement. This new requirement from Companies House affects all company directors, so it’s important to understand what you need to do to avoid delays when your confirmation statement is due.
What’s the Personal Code Requirement?
When you file your company’s next confirmation statement, you’ll need to include your Companies House personal code for all individuals appointed as a company director. This isn’t an optional field anymore – it’s mandatory. Without it, you won’t be able to submit the confirmation statement.
Your personal code is a unique identifier which Companies House issues after you’ve verified your identity. It proves you are who you say you are when filing documents with Companies House.
Why the New Requirement?
These changes form part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, designed to improve transparency and combat fraud in UK company formation and management. By requiring verified identities for directors, Companies House aims to make it more difficult for individuals to misuse the company registration system.
The identity verification process helps protect legitimate businesses from identity theft while giving authorities better tools to tackle economic crime. It also brings the UK in line with international best practices for corporate transparency.
Get Your Personal Code Before Your Confirmation Statement is Due
Don’t wait until the last minute. You need to verify your identity and get your personal code before you can file your confirmation statement. Here’s what you need to do:
- Go to the Companies House identity verification service online
- Create a Companies House account if you haven’t already
- Complete the verification process with your identity documents
- You’ll receive your unique personal code once you’re verified
You’ll need documents like your passport or driving licence and proof of your address. Most people get verified quickly, but give yourself plenty of time before your confirmation statement deadline, just in case.
If You’re a Director of Multiple Companies
Good news – you only need one personal code. If you’re a director of several companies, you’ll use the same code for all of them. You only go through the identity verification process once.
However, you will need to provide your personal code in each company’s confirmation statement separately. If you have three companies, you’ll enter the same code three times – once for each confirmation statement.
If You’re Both a Director and a PSC
Here’s where it gets a bit more complex. If you’re both a director and a Person with Significant Control (PSC) for the same company, you need to provide your personal code twice – but in different ways:
- As a director: Include your code in the confirmation statement itself
- As a PSC: Provide your code through a separate service within 14 days of your confirmation statement date
You’ll use the same personal code for both, but Companies House needs it submitted separately for each role.
Don’t Leave It Until the Last Minute
The key message here is simple: get your personal code sorted before your confirmation statement is due. If you wait until the filing deadline and haven’t verified your identity yet, you could miss the deadline.
Think of identity verification as a one-off task that makes everything easier going forward. Once you’ve got your personal code, filing confirmation statements becomes straightforward – you just need to include it each time.
